Class 10 Science Chapter 13: Concepts

Chapter 13 โ€“ Our Environment (Class 10 Science, NCERT) – Notes

๐Ÿ“… Published: 29 April, 2025 ๐Ÿ” Updated: 30 April, 2025 ๐Ÿ•’ Read: 4 min

๐ŸŒ What is the Environment?

The environment is everything around us โ€” air, water, land, animals, plants, and even tiny insects! It includes:

  • ๐ŸŒฟ Living things (plants, animals, humans)
  • ๐Ÿชจ Non-living things (sunlight, air, water, soil)

Together, these form an ecosystem.

๐Ÿงช 13.1 โ€“ Ecosystem: Whatโ€™s in It?

๐Ÿ‘‰ An ecosystem is a community where living things (plants, animals, microorganisms) interact with each other and with non-living things (air, water, soil, sunlight) in a specific area.

Examples:

  • ๐ŸŒณ A forest
  • ๐ŸŸ A pond
  • ๐Ÿ  An aquarium
๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿคโ€๐Ÿง‘ Living Things (Biotic)

๐Ÿ‘‰ The living parts of an ecosystem like plants, animals, and microorganisms are called biotic components.

  • ๐Ÿชด Producers: Green plants โ€” they make their own food using sunlight.
  • ๐Ÿฐ Consumers: Animals & humans โ€” they eat plants or other animals.
  • ๐Ÿ„ Decomposers: Bacteria & fungi โ€” they clean nature by breaking dead plants & animals.
๐ŸŒž Non-living Things (Abiotic)

๐Ÿ‘‰ The non-living parts of an ecosystem like sunlight, air, water, temperature, and soil are called abiotic components.

  • Sunlight โ˜€๏ธ
  • Water ๐Ÿ’ง
  • Soil ๐Ÿชจ
  • Air ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ
  • Temperature ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

These things help living things survive!

๐Ÿ”— 13.1.1 โ€“ Food Chain & Food Web

๐Ÿ”— What is a Food Chain?

๐Ÿ‘‰ A food chain is a sequence that shows how energy and food move from one organism to another in an ecosystem.

Example:
๐ŸŒฟ Grass โ†’ ๐Ÿ Goat โ†’ ๐Ÿฆ Lion

Each step is called a Trophic Level:

  1. ๐ŸŒฟ Producer (plants)
  2. ๐Ÿฐ Herbivore (plant eater)
  3. ๐Ÿ Carnivore (animal eater)
  4. ๐Ÿฆ… Top carnivore

๐Ÿง  Only 10% energy passes to the next level. Rest is lost as heat.

๐ŸŒ What is a Food Web?

๐Ÿ‘‰ A food web is a network of interconnected food chains where different organisms are linked with each other for food.
Example:

๐ŸฆŠ Fox eats ๐Ÿญ rats, ๐Ÿฆ birds, and ๐Ÿ‡ fruits.
So, many food chains join to form a food web

โš ๏ธ Biological Magnification

๐Ÿ‘‰ The process by which harmful chemicals (like pesticides) increase in quantity at each higher level of the food chain is called biological magnification.

Some harmful chemicals (like DDT, plastics) stay in the food chain.
As we go higher, these chemicals become more dangerous!

๐Ÿงช Fish โ†’ ๐Ÿ Snake โ†’ ๐Ÿฆ… Eagle โ†’ ๐Ÿ‘จ Human
Humans get the highest poison level. Thatโ€™s why chemical use should be less.

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ”ฌ 13.2 โ€“ How Do Humans Harm the Environment?

1. Ozone Layer Depletion

Ozone Layer

๐Ÿ‘‰ The ozone layer is a protective layer of gas high up in the atmosphere that absorbs harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.

Ozone Depletion

๐Ÿ‘‰ The thinning or damaging of the ozone layer due to the release of harmful chemicals like CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) is called ozone depletion.

  • The ozone layer protects us from โ˜€๏ธ harmful UV rays.
  • But gases like CFCs (used in fridges, ACs, sprays) are destroying it.
  • ๐ŸŒค๏ธ Less ozone = more UV rays = ๐Ÿ˜ฃ skin problems, eye damage, even cancer!

โœ… Good News:
After global efforts (like banning CFCs), the ozone layer is recovering!

2. Biodegradable vs Non-Biodegradable Waste

Biodegradable Waste

๐Ÿ‘‰ Substances that can be broken down naturally by microorganisms (like bacteria) are called biodegradable waste.

Examples: Vegetable peels, paper, cotton cloth.

Non-Biodegradable Waste

๐Ÿ‘‰ Substances that cannot be broken down by natural processes and stay in the environment for a long time are called non-biodegradable waste.

Examples: Plastic, glass, synthetic cloth.

TypeWhat It MeansExamples
โ™ป๏ธ BiodegradableBreaks down naturallyFood, leaves, paper
๐Ÿšซ non-biodegradableStays for yearsPlastic, glass, metal

๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ Plastic bags and bottles donโ€™t rot. They pollute land and harm animals!

๐Ÿ’ก Fun Activities in the Chapter
  • ๐ŸŒฟ Make your own ecosystem in a bottle or aquarium!
  • ๐Ÿ” Bury a banana peel and a plastic bag. After 1 week, see the difference โ€” banana is gone, plastic is still there!
