EX 13.2 (Question: 6)
A student noted the number of cars passing through a spot on a road for 100 periods each of 3 minutes and summarised it in the table given below. Find the mode of the data :
Solution:
A student recorded the number of cars passing through a spot for 100 intervals of 3 minutes each. The data is given below:
Where:
Modal class = 40 – 50
𝑙 = 40 (lower boundary of modal class)
𝑓1 = 20 (frequency of modal class)
𝑓0 = 12 (frequency of class before modal class)
𝑓2 = 11 (frequency of class after modal class)
ℎ = 10 (class width)
Mode
Using formula:
Mode, =𝒍+[(𝒇_𝟏−𝒇_𝟎)/(𝟐𝒇_𝟏−𝒇_𝟎−𝒇_𝟐 )]×𝒉
"Mode "=40+((20−12)/(2(20)−12−11))×10
=40+(8/(40−23))×10=40+(8/17)×10
						 =40+4.70						 =44.70
Therefore,
The mode of the number of cars passing through the spot is 44.70 cars.
