Why is respiration considered an exothermic reaction?

Respiration is the process by which organisms break down glucose (a sugar) using oxygen to release energy in the form of heat:

C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + energy

Since heat is released, it is an exothermic reaction.
